Conference on “INDIA: KNOWLEDGE AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO THE WORLD – THE NEXT DECADE”

On 26th October, 2010 I got a chance to attend this conference organized by AIMA. The Conference brainstormed at the highest level upon some of the critical issues being faced by the Knowledge and Professional Services industry in India today and thrived to develop a road map to stay ahead of the global competition.

The message from all speakers clearly indicated rapid growth in the IT/ BPO segment for the next decade. The key challenge is to bring reforms in the education sector to increase the available employable talent pool.

Listing down some Key statistics/ points raised by the speakers below for your reference-
The conference was inaugurated by Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, CEO Infosys. He set the stage by giving his viewpoints on this topic.

  • 50% new jobs last year were created by IT services last year
  • Infosys to hire 25,000 candidates from campus
  • Companies are going to move from a technology solutions provider to an end to end business solutions provider
  • Cloud is going to be the future- application products – Services for this to be developed in India
  • Need for MBA’s/ CA’s/ Lawyers will increase besides Engineers.
  • Cost is not the only benefit a customer looks for- Intial buy- in may be due to low cost, but a customer is retained/ grown through other value ads.
  • Work with campuses to increase employable pool. Research based education.

  • IT services industry has potential to reach $ 300 billion from current level of $ 50 billion dollars by 2020 with a projected growth rate of 20%.
  • Increasing opportunities from the PSU & Govt sectors
  • Need to scale up engineering talent intake (Reforms needed in education, with input from corporate)
  • Globalised Approach- hire local talent in other countries- Improve brand equity of Indian companies overseas to attract & retain talent
  • To invest in new product development

Mr Ashok Kumar C Manoli, Principal Secretary, IT, BT S&T, Govt. of Karnataka

  • BPO has grown over 35% in each of the last 5 yrs, to grow by 50% this year
  • Use of Mobile commerce in the future
  • Extending presence to Tier 2 & 3 cities will help reduce costs by 35%

Mr Partha De Sarkar, CEO Hinduja Global Solutions

  • BPO employed 1.8 billion till 09 & can grow to employing 5 billion people
  • Seasonal peaks are unlikely (Was last seen in 2005 where 1000+ candidates were hired in a month)
  • Focus on quality will improve
  • Cost of Training, cannot be taken by corporate for long (Expect the Govt intervention to refine the education system)
  • Hinduja Global Solutions- 98% is BPO.

  • Requirement for strong corporate governance.
  • Reputation of the BPO industry to be improved
  • Non Linear growth is expected
  • Social networking as a business tool to be used widel

Mr Roopen Roy, Managing Director, Deloitte & Touche

  • 1000 more universities are expected in the next 10 years
  • India is leading in IT Services but has large footprints in product & innovation
  • Education is a huge problem.

Mr P Jayakumar, CEO, Toonz Animation India

  • Animation industry is 80 billion currently to grow to 100 billion by 2012
  • Cost Arbitrage is the key driver for the development of foreign movies in India.

Mr Ramesh Vangal, Chairman, The Katra Group

  • 6 of the wealthiest companies in the world are in China
  • 65% OF THE POPULATION ARE UNDER 30
  • 615 million mobile phone users in the country

Dr P Anandan, Managing Director, Microsoft Research India

  • Less than 11% in the world is spent on R&D, In India its less than 1%
  • Microsoft spends 9 billion dollars on R&D every year
  • 3.5 million Engineers pass out every year in India (In the US its 75000). Still 80 PHD’s every year in India compared to 900 in US.

  • Need to convert data into analytics
  • Remote healthcare management – Latest trend in China
  • Emphasized on growth of Knowledge economy and Knowledge services.
